202

My intention with this blog is first and foremost to open up and develop my interest in photography. To reawaken the passion I had for it in my youth.

For the most part this has already been accomplished and I am now thinking beyond this experiment and what I need to do in order to become the photographer I wish to be.

But I get incredibly frustrated when I put effort into either a photo or sharing a quote I find or seek out and then...hear nothing, absolutely nothing from anyone.

It's hard for me to cope with because being who I am I take these things very personally - it goes straight to my heart.

Of particular hurt is reaching out to other photographers and artists and bloggers and never hear anything in return. Am I really that terrible? Am I really that lacking in ability to touch someone even on the simplest of levels?

Perhaps over dramatic but that is the way I feel today.

So again I turn off the comments on this blog. I don't want anyone to feel as though they have to comment but I also don't like working on this day after day only to lose focus on why I am doing it because no one is communicating with me and that makes me feel bad.

Perhaps I will soon turn them back on or maybe they stay off for the duration of this run, I don't know.

In the meantime a sincere thank you to the few who have shared thoughts and communications with me.

193 - Kiawah

April 9, 1995 - July 8, 2009

Waking up and going to sleep are the hardest…her absence most keenly felt. We haven’t had the heart to change a thing, her blanket still in position with her scent still lingering. It is both sad and comforting. I suppose more comforting if I’m being honest.

“Its going to be hard without her but she's given us so much love and companionship that we have to know when its time”

Kiawah – alternately known as Binks, Binky, Miss Binks, Kiawahlini, KiKi, Mooshi and lastly our beloved Bird Whisperer slipped peacefully away from us on Wednesday.

On September 11, 2001, shaking as I opened the door and dropping to my knees, she came bouncing into the room, unaware that the world had changed forever, only concerned with greeting me, happy to see me walk through the door. I scooped her up and sobbing pressed my face into her soft fur. Feeling so scared but then also feeling waves of relief and happiness that she provided just from her unconditional love and no questions asked support.

So many memories have flooded my mind as we have gone through this difficult time of her sickness and passing over. Peas, carrots, chips, watermelon, Beggin’ Strips, rope, Baby, Pinky, Woodstock. Squirrels, the park, bedtime, , high fives and dancing, going to Sam and Rob’s, walks, games of chase, tongue hanging out, laying in the sunshine, stickers from the rug, carrying Lucy the Bird in her mouth, digging at the bathroom rug, standing at the water bowl when it was empty... I don’t exaggerate when I say I could go on and on.

This beautiful little soul. So loving and trusting.

She always gravitated to those less fortunate or those who needed extra care. Had she been human I’m certain she would have been an activist – working with the poor, championing the lost cause. She just adored children and elderly people. It was amazing to watch her gentleness when with them. Never jumping roughly always adjusting her approach and touch according to their size or condition.

She entered our lives when we were young and just together a year. A bridge - the time from the last breaths of youth into the hacking call of middle age. Living and knowing my grandparents and Bill’s grandmother and there to comfort us as they passed, the last one being my nana who passed last year. I remember her sitting on Nana’s lap in the hospice center, visiting and making her smile last May. They were a sweet pair to see.

One memory comes to my mind so strongly – before my grandparents sold their home Kiawah and I were visiting them. She was having a run around their yard (something she loved to do but didn’t often get the chance to do off lead) and my grandfather was just getting the biggest kick out of her. As we watched she disappeared behind their old tree and when she reappeared she was carrying a fallen branch nearly 5 times the size of her body! And there she came happily trotting across their lawn huge branch in her mouth. My grandfather, laughing, called out to my grandmother to come and “see this”. It was an awesome moment and a memory that always brings a smile to my heart.

Of course I remember so many other things over the years, some good and other times not so good (when we were in Mexico in 2000 she got loose from B’s aunt who was minding her and went missing for 3 days – this inspired B to write the book “Kiawah’s Big Adventure” and also the time a couple of years back on Halloween when I made the mistake of grabbing her as she was asleep and she bit me – yikes!) all a part of any relationship. But most of all I will remember the spirit of this creature. Her strong, loving, funny, giving, stubborn spirit that refused to ever give in no matter what.

She gave me a love I have never experienced and will likely never experience again. Very rarely do we engage in relationships that provide love unconditionally, truly and purely.

Either one or both of us were with her pretty much round the clock over the last week of her life. Although she had many good moments she was having more and more trouble eating because of the growth of the tumor and she couldn’t see anymore. Neither of us wanted her to hurt herself or feel afraid.

But the good moments they were GOOD. I treasure them now…simply laying on the bed reading while she slept, summer wind blowing in the bedroom while she lay against my leg. That means the world to me now…I am grateful that she got to move and live with us in the new place…the place we decided a couple weeks back to christen “Kiawah’s Treehouse”. She really did love it there and it was a much more peaceful place for her to live her final weeks.

On Wednesday we spent the day with her. It was a good for her…she slept some (we joined her), we both walked her and her flock of birds came to greet her one last time. We sat on the stoop with her and she seemed to be picking up all sorts of great scents on the breeze. The sun shined. She ate the beef pilaf baby food she had come to adore and devour…I got to hand feed her the last bits from the jar. And she sat on the couch with us in the sun…looking regal and adorable at the same time…as usual. And she still had that youthful, puppy energy – she never, ever lost that to the end.

We shared some private time all together. And we left the apartment.

When we got to the City she walked along the sidewalk a good part of the way. She still had some spring in her step and her strong spirit and joie de vie was, to the end, apparent.

When they gave her the sedative and moved aside she looked relieved and happy to see us there. We told her all the things we wanted to, we told her we loved her and what a good dog she was…I looked in the face and told her how grateful I was that she came into my life and that I loved her – and she looked at me and gave me a kiss, something we usually had to say “give me a kiss” to get. But she did it on her own. And then B leaned over and she did the same for him…and then she laid down and gave a huge sigh. The doctor came in and very soothingly spoke as she administered the euthanasia…but we think she had already passed, that the sigh was the moment she left us. She really did look as though she were just sleeping. There she was on her blanket we brought from home…sleeping in an eternal rest.

The tears have not stopped since then. As my cousin so succinctly put it we were “family of three that is now two”, at least in the physical sense. The pain and longing for her are so strong. I know this is what had to happen, while she was able to still do things and understand our love and share hers as well as retain her dignity (as the doctor very wisely pointed out) but it doesn’t lessen the pain and it doesn’t mean I wasn’t thinking selfishly on that afternoon right to the end. Wanting to pick her up and just run away from there…even just for one more day.

Some day the pain will be less and the joy and happiness will return, her memories leading the charge. Right now I mourn and it will hurt for a long time to come. But in a way that hurt is also a comfort because it reminds me just how much of an impact this marvelous creature had on my life…the impact she had on many lives. I’m grateful to have been her dad and I’m grateful to have been in her life.

I will desperately miss her but I will never, ever, ever forget her until I sigh my own last breath.

Fly peacefully my sweet Binks, we’ll see you again one day…

"Good-night! good-night! as we so oft have said
Beneath this roof at midnight, in the days
That are no more, and shall no more return.
Thou hast but taken up thy lamp and gone to bed;
I stay a little longer, as one stays
To cover up the embers that still burn."

i went running this afternoon. first time since kiawah had to leave.

maybe it was my imagination, maybe it was something else but...on my way back over the brooklyn bridge i looked down and...i could see her running along side me. the way she looked when she was healthy.

she loved to run.

anyway i saw her clearly running, hind legs kicking, tongue flapping to the side as she ran. i forgot that her tongue did that and it made me smile. she ran ahead and then slowed down - in a little game of catch me if you can that she loved. one of the reasons that she couldn't be off her lead unless in a secure area. but today she was off the lead and running with me.

then after we got to carroll and clinton she was gone...

i like to think that the next time i go for my run she will be back by my side.

"her last walk"

i hurt.

i miss her. i didn't want to let her go. i'm tired of everyone saying it was the "right thing to do" and it was "for the best".

i want her here.

if i could have snatched her up and ran with her yesterday i would have.

i'm writing about her but i'm not ready to post it yet. maybe by the weekend...

189

late. and no photo.

she's gone. kiawah is gone.

and it hurts like fucking hell. i've lost loved ones but honestly this is only comparable in pain to losing my grandmother last year.

i know it was "for the best" and it was a peaceful day and passing but it doesn't alleviate the pain and it doesn't mean i don't wish she were here right now or that i didn't want to pick her up and run when we got to the doctor's office.

i'll never forget this little soul. and the pain is something that comforts me right now because it reminds me just how much she meant and what a vacancy she will leave in our lives.

a beautiful community garden (one of the many in this city - they will take your breath away as you stop and think of the beauty and wonder that exists amongst the traffic, the bricks. the people and the cracks) not far from us.

i like to imagine that when we leave this existence and travel on to the next this is what greets us...simple, beautiful, lush, verdant gardens full of flowers, vegetables, herbs and paths where we walk along and feel the spirirts of all those we love alongside us.

peace, contentment, love and freedom from earthly suffering...in annie's garden.

who am i to play god? i'm barely a decent human being nevermind a deity.

but the quality of her life doesn't match the spirit. her tenacity, her zest, her feistiness and her passion - they are bigger than her body can handle now.

tuesday is the day she will leave us.

it racks me and it saddens me and it tears me to shreds because i will so miss this little soul. but if there was a way to ease the suffering of someone you loved and make their inevitable passing less painful shouldn't, wouldn't you do it, human or animal?

we have to...it's time and we have to.

so tonight we toast her. we drink champagne on the stoop with her and we give her a little bowl full of it and she licks it off of our fingers. the sunset is beautiful and her beloved birds flit about and sing the prelude to evening's darkness.

soon she will have peace and so will we.

[ed. on 7/6: I've just been informed we can't go in until Wednesday night - while I am grateful for another day it does prolong the inevitable...but I will choose instead to focus on being grateful]

i'm half way through catlow:365.

and half way through 2009.

i feel as though i should have something to say or something to offer. i'm learning - learning things about myself and about the world around me but...well, i just don't feel comfortable going there right now.

but congratulations to me - i've stuck by this and i'm now entering the downslope. i believe in myself a little bit more than i did 183 days ago and that's, to quote ms. stewart, a good thing.

on the way home this evening the fireflies...oh, the fireflies were so bright and so plentiful.

i'd forgotten how wonderful it was to see them - we never saw them that often living in the city except when we would be in union square on the odd summer evening that they were active.

they provide light and comfort and hope. links to the past and beacons for the future.

i love them.

right now i am not myself. i'm not sure i have been myself for a while now - but the tricky thing is that i am not so sure i even know what that means. i just know that things are off.

that doesn't have to be bad.

on the positive side of not being "myself", i am finding the joy more and more in moments. i'm wondering if maybe the last year plus has been teaching me that. that life is ticking away all the time and try as i may, the ticking cannot and should not be ignored.

if i don't appreciate this moment for what it is, what then do i have??

And you learn to love each moment and appreciate each day - it's the warmth when you hug your dog, the taste of key lime gelato and the sliver of sun shining through dark clouds - because they all remind you that no matter what, when, why or how joy is there waiting to be found.

I have to make this the last time I use this iPhone app to take my picture for the day. It is really fun (and unlike my real toy camera - the Holga - it requires no film loading, etc.) but incredibly lazy and requires no skill beyond seizing an opportunity to capture an image that you find appealing. That won't make me a better photographer in the end now will it?

Anyway we went out walking today in the mist and rain - down by the Gowanus and came across so many interesting doors, alleys, walls, grafitti, etc. - made me mad that I had decided not to bring a camera. I loved this wall with the paint chips and different colors - it was bright and comforting in the quiet and darkness of the overcast, wet afternoon.

I'm certainly dating myself here but it just came to me how exciting it used to be to get my fresh copy of Dynamite in the mail in the 80's. Or Ranger Rick Magazine's colorful and beautifully detailed photographs all through its glossy pages. How exciting it was for the mail to come then!!!

And all those celebrities I used to write letters to - when their replies came through (whether from them or not) - incredible!

A fun memory...glad I thought about it...

(another iPhone pic)

Inexplicably, whenever we've taken Kiawah out here in the new hood, she is followed by several birds, sometimes up to 10 or 12 will be around her at one time. We've taken to calling her The Bird Whisperer.

They stare at each other, dance around each other and then eventually the birds fly off. Today one landed on the gate next to our stoop and stared down on her. Watching briefly before moving on.

Maybe they know she is sick? Maybe there is some unspoken pact she has made with them. Maybe this is some sort of watchful eye from those not in our plane of existence watching out for our lovely little one as she travels on the path from one plane to another.

Maybe it's simply that the birds associate dogs and more specifically those who walk with them as a source for food (bread crumbs thrown, etc.)?

Who knows for sure?

I choose to believe in the former. It gives me comfort and fortifies my faith - my confusing, unidentifiable faith.

(taken with iPhone - battery went dead - rather needs recharge - on me in my primary cam of choice these days)

How horrible is it that I find myself getting rather melancholy whilst the TONY's are on?

I get this nagging and horrible, horrible ache in my soul. An ache that whispers to me of the failure in having not given my all in the pursuit of my life's true dream. And what makes this worse is that no matter what declarations I make or what promises I make to leave this all behind, silly dreams, I just can't. Or I haven't.

And I don't know that I want to - but I don't want them to hurt me either.

I'm not sitting here suicidal in the dark lamenting the loss of youth - I guess it's more of the younger me - still insides, still alive, still fighting - expressing its sadness and disappointment in our failure to not have given it a real chance. And I don't think that would exist even if I were still in this same place and still not a working actor IF I had really given it a shot and done what I always should have and intended to do.

A pickle, no?

Well, anyway, there are chapters of my life still to be written and who knows what they contain? I suppose rather than let the "what ifs" drag me down I should allow them to energize and propel me towards the realization of my potential.

I shall try!!!

SO I am knee deep in my fascination with Charles Schulz, currently in the middle of David Michaelis' biography.

This quote today addresses at least to a degree what I struggle with as someone who feels a pull toward faith but find it hard to reconcile with the harm that "overly organized" churches have done to the world.

CMS, a deeply spiritual Christian who earlier in his life had identified as evangelical, later(in 1975) stated this:

"I am fearful of an overly organized church and I am very fearful of a church which equates itself with Americanism, a frightening trend: people who regard Christianity and Americanism as being virtually the same thing."

I came across this quote in the Schulz biography. I really love it - and it can be applied so perfectly to those people we saw sitting on the subway this evening, centimeters apart, banging away on their Blackberries, lost in their little handheld devices, pushing them further apart than television ever could have dreamed.

"Television is a medium of entertainment which permits millions of people to listen to the same joke at the same time, and yet remain lonesome."

Just when I thought my misanthopic streak couldn't get any stronger living in this City - I move to a place where I must take the subway every day.

People are idiots.

People are ridiculously slow and cripplingly overweight.

Those are the things I observed on the F today.

Oh and the guy screaming his head off at ragged intervals and punching the side of the subway car this morning.

Yes humanity is beautiful through my lens this Monday.
